Getting Ready for the Fall Season

First, a few housekeeping items. We have our upcoming spey casting clinic that takes place August 26 and 27 (the last weekend of the month) and there are spaces still available. The sessions take place in the morning and with a 5-to-1 student to instructor ratio, we can easily accommodate folks of all casting abilities. Whether you are new to spey casting or an experienced caster, we can help you out. More details can be found on the clinic here

If you are interested in fishing with us this fall for salmon or steelhead, we do have a handful of dates still open. That said, feel free to give us a call to see if we have any last-minute cancellations (also, keep an eye on this blog as well as Facebook and Instagram as we’ll post any open dates there).

In short, fall is coming and approaching faster than we can all imagine. The news from Lake Ontario is encouraging with charter captains reporting exceptional salmon fishing over the last few months. Generally speaking, this has always been a good sign for excellent fishing on the Salmon River. But as always, our crystal ball is far from perfect. And the fish will do what they want. All we can do is hope for the best and I’ll continue to share reports over the course of the season.

As of now, based on current conditions, I am anticipating an early run of salmon. Keep in mind these runs are usually never big but if you don’t mind covering water and putting in the time, you can be rewarded with some great and energy-filled salmon. Other big news....last week, the Salmon River received some very heavy rains and as a result, the flows actually exceeded 4000cfs.  As I write this blog, the water flows are still very high for this time of year. This is good news because this will flush out all the hot water that is in the system including the reservoir and if this weather pattern continues into September, it could help line up an early push of fish.

As you can imagine, there’s several reasons to be hopeful for a good start to the salmon season - unseasonably cool weather, heavy rains, and good indicators on fishing the lake. But as always, time will tell so in short, it’s time to get your salmon gear in order. In an upcoming blog, I will give you some tips on getting your equipment ready to go.

See you on the river,

Jay
